Calligraphy and Interpretations

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MATSUO BASHŌ. In March of 2019 T.R. Reid and I set out to hike parts of the Nakasendo Trail, an ancient highway that winds its way through old villages and across mountain passes between Nagoya and Tokyo. In days gone by it was travelled by Samurai and pilgrims, feudal lords and wandering poets. The haiku poet Matsuo Bashō came this way in 1684. These images are my interpretation of Bashō’s haiku. T.R.’s calligraphy beautifully captures the essence of the poetry.
